How to keep email conversations private, whether they are personal or business-related, is a growing safety concern. Fortunately there are some simple ways to encrypt emails and sensitive attachments, maximizing security and minimizing the possibility of interception.
gpg4o Encryption Software
gpg4o follows earlier encryption software developments and is based on GNU Privacy Guard (GnuPG), which works with various systems including Linux KMail and Evolution and instant messaging platform Psi. GnuPG itself is based on the universally used OpenPGP protocol for encrypting email using public and private keys. gpg4o is able to sign, encrypt and decrypt messages and attachments.
What Does gpg4o Support
gpg4o is a tool available for Microsoft Outlook 2010 and Outlook 2013. It is one of the most popular and secure krypto campaign solutions for Microsoft Outlook. gpg4o supports Microsoft Windows versions 7, 8, Vista and XP. It is also utilised successfully with Microsoft Exchange, Zarafa, Kerio Connect, POP3 and IMAP4. Because it is based on OpenPGP it is compatible with related applications such as enigmail, PGP Desktop and GPGMail, amongst others.
How gpg4o Encrypts Email
Following the OpenPGP standard, gpg4o uses both public and private keys. To send an encrypted message, senders look up the recipients public key and send the email encrypted with this key. Only the recipient will be able to read the message as it carries their unique code. Public keys are passed to contacts and other interested parties, either as attachments via email or by posting them on personal websites where anyone can look them up. A private key, as the name implies, must not be disclosed. They are used by the recipient for decrypting messages sent along with their public key. If a third party is able to intercept the encrypted email they will still not be able to read it.
Encrypting Stored Email
Email applications accessed via computers, tablets or smartphones should also make use of stored email encryption, so that messages and attachments cannot be accessed if the device is lost or stolen. Applications such as Barracuda Message Archiver (BMA) capture, index and store email messages, making it easy for the account holder to retrieve them as necessary. All email data is stored securely.
Features of gpg4o
gpg4o benefits from user-friendly installation and seamless integration into Microsoft Office 2010 and 2013, together with useful features such as automated rules for sending emails. The gpg4o datasheet has further information on special features.
